Recently I noticed I had been revisiting the dark night, the awakening, all of it — and I did not recognize the territory, because it felt so different after all the growth. That is the last teaching of this guide, and maybe the most merciful: life is a spiral.

You will come around again — higher

We revisit themes and positions again and again, but never exactly the same. A theme returning is not failure and not backsliding. It is the wheel turning: the same material, met by a person who has grown. This cycle, for me, has been about integration — all the poetry I wrote, all the revelations and internal victories, finally becoming one life instead of a pile of intense moments.

The old alchemists mapped it as Nigredo → Albedo → Citrinitas → Rubedo → ∞: the blackening, the whitening, the yellowing, the reddening — and then, the sign says, again, forever. Only after a full spin could I look back at my dark-night poems and feel them as victories instead of wounds. This hero's journey has been told. There, and back again.

The ☯: opposites are not enemies

Integration is where the dualistic frame itself softens. Expansion and contraction. Dark night and awakening. Masculine and feminine. The word pairs that once fought are seen as one movement — each side containing the seed of the other, neither side exterminated. Even the old words return changed: a word like failure or darkness, deconstructed at one turn of the spiral, no longer says the same thing at the next.

What it feels like on the other side

Not finished. Not perfected. Quieter. The lessons stop being things you recite and become things you are: your word kept without drama, your speech clean of judgment, your presence unperformed. And when the spiral brings an old pain around again, you will know its name this time — and it will not take the whole house down.

From rubedo, my message is the one I left in There and Back Again: self-actualization is your first purpose. We are all called to this work. We are all capable. We all hold the Kingdom of Heaven within.

In my own words

Key lines from Spiral Out, then Spiral In and There and Back Again, lightly punctuated from the transcript so they read as I spoke them:

“They talk about how life is spiral, and we don’t come back to the exact same point like a circle, but we revisit similar circumstances, like a spiral. But I often wondered: are we spiraling out or in?”

“First you expand as big as you can. You blow up to touch the scale of the universe. And then you bring that back to the scale of a human, and tighten and tighten, and capture that essence in this tightly coiled body.”

“I’ve become aware that I’ve been revisiting the dark night of the soul, awakening, and integration positions. I didn’t recognize it because it felt so different after all the growth.”

“Only after a full spin around the wheel of fortune could I really feel these as victories.”

“Self-actualization is your first purpose. We are all called to do this work. We are all capable. We all hold the Kingdom of Heaven within.”

One small practice

Write one paragraph answering: what theme is my life revisiting right now? Then underline every charged word in what you wrote — again, failure, darkness, behind — and deconstruct one of them: its opposite, its shadow, what it could not say last time around. Date it. This guide ends where it began, with words — except now you can see them as words. The spiral continues.
