☯ Yin Yang guide · The Map

Words, symbols, body, reality

The eight steps work mostly with words, because words are where the model is built — and where we can first get our hands on it. But language is the origin of this work, not its whole territory. This is the map the steps are walking on.

Level one: language

At the surface: words, names, stories. Every word cuts a pair — this, not that; me, not you; good, not bad — and carries judgment and emotion fused inside it. Together the words build the model of the world, and of the self, that we then live inside.

Reason and logic belong here. They are language working carefully: questioning an assumption, following a thread, noticing when a word is doing work it has not earned. Most of the eight steps live at this level, because it is the level we can reach on purpose.

At the lower edge of language sits poetry — language reaching below itself. A poem is borderline subconscious: it says in image and rhythm what plain sentences cannot yet say, and it lets what is underneath be spoken aloud, where it can be seen, questioned, and claimed. That is why this guide is full of poems. They are not illustrations. They are the border crossing.

Level two: symbol

Below language is the realm of demons, angels, beasts behind doors, dreams, and images — the shapes of things that do not fit the linguistic model. What we have no words for appears symbolically instead. The pre-verbal does not send sentences; it sends shapes.

This level is not decoded away and it is not believed literally and left alone. It is met. A demon in a dream is a construct the subconscious builds around friction in the model — and the friction is real. Standing at the cobwebbed door, looking at the shadow on the ground, naming the beast: this is the work at this level, done slowly, without flinching and without worshipping the shape.

Level three: the physical

Below the symbolic — or alongside it, felt at the same time — sits the physical: bodies, sensation, habit, action. It is an area of the work in its own right, not just the road down. The body is grounded in reality: it touches the real directly, before words and often before symbols. And yet the Unity below is not obvious here. At the obvious physical level bodies look separate — your hand, my hand, this person, that person — and how self and other are truly related is hidden by exactly that obviousness. Words ride on breath. Symbols are felt as sensation. Reality is lived through a body, or not lived at all.

Somatics. The stomach aches before any sentence about it exists. Breath, tears, grounding with bare feet in the dirt, yoga with intention — these move the work out of sentences and into sensation, where much of it was stored. An emotion faced in the body stops needing to knock.

Addiction breaking. A karmic loop runs through a body, and sometimes its weakest link is physical: a physiological addiction — sugar, a drug — inside a feedback loop that also includes emotions. It is hard to address the emotions while the imbalance keeps feeding them. Breaking the loop at the link you can reach is spiritual work from the physical end.

The body as temple. What is taken in, how the body is rested, washed, moved, and tended is practice, not scenery. Health here is not purity — nothing is pure — it is sunrise in the same forest, daily, until the pattern that fed on the dark finds less and less to eat.

Action aligns intention. Speaking yourself into existence only works if the body then does what the voice said. Keeping your word is physical: the tending, the showing up, the loaded car actually driven. You are entitled to the labor, not the fruit — and the labor is done with hands. Intention spoken by a centered body is a kept word waiting to happen; spoken by a scattered one, it is a press release.

Level four: reality — the Unity point

Below language, symbol, and even the obvious physical level is reality itself, as Unity: the present, the Now, before any model is built over it. The body is grounded in this, but it is not obvious from the body — it is what is found when the separation the physical level presents as self-evident is seen through. Here the guide stops being dualistic at all. At this depth, the forms from the higher levels collapse into something purer. A demon — a personified shape at the symbolic level, a whispering voice at the linguistic level — collapses into a karmic loop: a destructive pattern reproducing inside a person, spreading between people, down families and through communities. Less costume, same observed thing, closer to what it actually is.

The same collapse happens to every pair. Pure and impure: there is a seed of each in the other, and below the level where words cut them apart they were never two substances. Apologizer and apologizee, self and model, the river and its banks — one reality, named from two sides. I am not the model. I am that which is experiencing reality. This is why the deepest teachings in the sequence are the shortest: at this level there is very little left to say, and what remains is a sink full of dirty dishes, in the present, and at most a feeling about it.

The holistic loop

No level works alone, because a loop never lives on one level. A karmic loop runs through word, image, emotion, physiology, habit, relationship, and place at the same time — the flask buried in farm dirt is a word, a craving, a family pattern, and a countryside, all at once. So the work can enter at whichever link is reachable: deconstruct the word, meet the symbol, breathe through the sensation, break the physical link, take the aligned action. Entering anywhere honestly weakens the whole loop. That is the holistic approach — not doing everything at once, but knowing that everything is connected, and starting where your hands actually reach.

Techniques, harvested from the Dark Night

These are not imported methods. Each one was lived first and written down in the Dark Night sequence, and each link below goes to the poem or insight where it appears, read from inside the dark and from after the awakening.

Working with words (Level one)

  • Question and reframe the assumption — the whisper recruits you through an assumption; examine that, and you are fighting at the level where it recruits. Demons whisper tales
  • Autosuggestion, honestly admitted — what was repeated in can be repeated out; take the microphone back, daily, on purpose. To heal your core wounds · Feelings slowly bubble
  • Dissect the unspeakable word — capture the words sentenced as “too dark,” spread them on the table; a dissected word loses its magic. Words too dark to share
  • Name the root fear, not its thousand filings — “scary” is a generic classification thrown over unlike creatures; name the one fear underneath and the filing system collapses. Everyone fears God
  • Deny the noun, keep the act — you did a failing thing; you were never “a failure.” Weakness is soil, not identity. See your great failures
  • Speak the subconscious aloud — what has no words acts, and you find out afterward; turn it into words, or frame words around its shadow topography, and it becomes a known location on the map. Why write poetry? · A poem for a life
  • File shoulds and hopes as fiction — they do not exist within the present; seen as stories, they stop ruling it. Past and future are not subjectively real
  • Look for your shadow in the shadow of each thing — break the shadow down word by word, story by story. The core technique of this guide. There is nothing pure in reality

Meeting symbols and shadow (Level two)

  • Stand at the door — what moans behind the cobwebbed door has no words yet, so it arrives as a beast; deciding it gets no more free room is the practice. Cobweb covered door
  • Face the shadow knowing the light is behind you — a cast shadow falls opposite the light; you can face one or the other, never both. Darkness during shadow work is the direction you are facing, not proof the light left. Shadow projection
  • Decline to be the pattern’s next host — the “enemy within” recruits your words as its transmission vector; examine the sentences instead of obeying them, and it starves. Enemy within
  • Dig for bedrock — what is buried does not disappear; it waits at shovel-depth, including pain from other eras. Under the soaked layers there is a stratum that holds. Pacha in the dirt

Working with the body (Level three, the physical)

  • Breathe the ache instead of arguing with it — change the name from “anxiety” to energy moving, and breathe; the breath does not argue. Somatic release · Breath deep and chi flows
  • Let tears do their work — catharsis comes up from below thought; something in the system moves toward the injured places, and the crying is how that movement is felt. Tears well up from deep
  • Ground — bare feet in the dirt, done on purpose: spiritual work from the physical end, the body settled first, so seeing can arrive before words do. It is also why this poem carries almost no charged words. Morning birds singing
  • Center before you intend — yoga as anti-performance: nobody watches, nothing is demonstrated, and intention gets a body to live in. Awake with yoga
  • Break the loop at its physical link — do not suffer vices to feed the emotions they ride on; the body is a temple, and this is tending it. Don’t suffer vices · Spiritual health
  • Face it as weather — integrate and dissipate, in that order; what is not fought washes over, and the self remains. Facing emotions
  • Emotional aikido — understand first: whose energy is this, what old word did it strike? Then let it finish its sentence unreturned. Strong hits come and go
  • Do the labor; release the fruit — entitled to the tending, not the harvest; fidelity to the work on ordinary Tuesdays. While tending garden

Resting in reality (Level four, non-dual)

  • Remove the pressure — resistance persists, acceptance dissolves: ice under no pressure does not melt or fight; it sublimes, often when you have looked away. Ice with no pressure
  • Reclaim the chi without judgment — the tree sucks its sugars back from fruit that cannot ripen, with no word against the fruit. Energy released into what cannot grow can be drawn home. Fruit out of season
  • Hold the superposition kindly — before naming, a feeling is anger and sadness; the name is the observation, not a photograph. Sometimes the honest question is: does it matter? Mess of tangled threads
  • Remember the river is not its banks — the same water through many channels over eons; changing path is how a river irrigates the plain. River laps worn banks · I cannot unsee what I’ve seen
  • Sail without a destination — wu wei is not passivity; it is no longer arguing with the water. Let’s go sail away
  • See the seed in each thing — yin in yang, apology inside resentment, resentment inside apology; at the sub-linguistic level the opposites are unified. There is nothing pure in reality · As I feel my third eye stretching open

Walking it

You do not need to visit every level every day. Walk the eight steps for the language work. Come back to this map when a word will not loosen, when a symbol will not translate, when the body is carrying what the mouth cannot say, or when — quietly, in the present — the pairs collapse on their own and there is nothing left to fix.

To work this map in conversation, bring a word, a feeling, or a symbol to the ☯ Yin Yang Companion on Google Gemini — an interactive helper trained on this guide and its poems. It is an agent, not a person and not a therapist; it will start wherever your hands actually reach.
